Masterclasses

A masterclass is, in essence, a private lesson conducted in public. Usually we like to have four to six advanced students who are chosen to perform by a number of distinguished faculty members, while other students, faculty, and members of the community are encouraged to observe. Masterclasses are important educational opportunities for both students and faculty, Bozidar Vukotic, our cellist says. “It is good for students to be exposed to different teachers. It gives them a fresh perspective and inspires them to improve. They get excited and work very hard if they’re going to perform in front of someone famous. For the teachers, observing a masterclass can bring new insights as well and lead to a re-evaluation of their own teaching methods.”

We normally conduct masterclasses over one day.
The timetable would be as follows, with 6 groups taking part:

10.00 – 13.00 First three groups are given roughly an hour each

13.00 – 15.00 A lunch and social break

15.00 – 18.00 Last three groups are given roughly an hour each

Our classes are not competitions, as our violinist Robert Atchison says, “ I feel strongly that when people compete for prizes they can loose site of the true joy of music making” Therefore, we like to conduct our classes in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Olga Dudnik, pianist with the London piano trio says, “We can all learn from each other”

We want everyone to have had a musical experience, and that includes us.

It can damage a student if they feel they are being judged, as opposed to being inspired and encouraged.

If we all leave with a smile on our faces and a glow in our hearts, then the day has been a success!
